Bathroom Safety Guide
Everything you need to know about making bathrooms safer for seniors and people with mobility challenges.
Install Grab Bars
Properly mounted grab bars at the toilet, tub, and shower are the single most impactful bathroom safety upgrade. They should be mounted into wall studs and rated for 250+ lbs.
Add Non-Slip Surfaces
Non-slip mats and adhesive strips in the shower and on bathroom floors reduce fall risk significantly. Look for products with a certified slip resistance rating.
Consider a Roll-In Shower
Eliminating the tub-to-shower threshold removes a major trip hazard and allows wheelchair access. A fold-down bench makes showering safer and less tiring.
Upgrade to a Comfort-Height Toilet
Standard toilets are 15" high — comfort-height toilets are 17–19", making sitting and standing much easier for people with mobility challenges.
Use a Handheld Shower Head
A handheld showerhead on a sliding bar allows bathing from a seated position and makes rinsing far easier and safer than a fixed overhead fixture.
Improve Lighting
Poor lighting contributes to bathroom falls. Add bright, glare-free lighting, including a nightlight for nighttime visits.
